Professional Lawn Aeration in Metro Detroit

Core aeration relieves soil compaction, allowing your lawn to breathe. Using professional Stinger equipment, we extract deep, consistent cores - letting water, air, and nutrients reach the roots where they're needed most.

What is Core Aeration?

Core aeration is a mechanical process that uses hollow tines to remove small plugs (or "cores") of soil and thatch from your lawn. These plugs are typically 2-3 inches deep and about ½ inch in diameter, spaced 2-6 inches apart across your entire lawn.

Over time, soil becomes compacted from foot traffic, mowing, and natural settling. Compacted soil prevents air, water, and nutrients from reaching grass roots - leading to thin, weak turf that's vulnerable to weeds, disease, and drought stress.

By creating thousands of small holes in your lawn, aeration opens channels for essential elements to penetrate deep into the root zone. The result? A healthier, more resilient lawn that looks better and withstands stress.

When Should You Aerate Your Lawn?

In Michigan, the best time to aerate cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass) is during their peak growth periods:

Spring Aeration

April - May

Spring aeration helps lawns recover from winter compaction. Combined with overseeding, it can quickly transform your lawn for summer enjoyment.

Fall Aeration

August - October

Cooler temperatures and increased moisture help grass recover quickly. Combined with overseeding, fall aeration prepares your lawn for the following spring.

Signs Your Lawn Needs Aeration

  • Water runs off instead of soaking in
  • Soil feels hard and dense when you push a screwdriver into it
  • Thick thatch layer (more than ½ inch)
  • Grass looks thin, stressed, or has bare patches
  • Heavy foot traffic or clay soil

Aeration FAQs

Core aeration is a lawn treatment process that removes small plugs of soil and thatch from your lawn. This relieves soil compaction, allows air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots, and promotes healthier, stronger turf growth.
We exclusively use Stinger Aeration and Seeding Equipment - industry-leading commercial machines designed for superior core extraction. Unlike residential-grade aerators, Stinger machines pull deeper, more consistent cores that maximize soil penetration and lawn recovery.
1-Pass Aeration is a single complete pass across your lawn, ideal for annual maintenance on healthy lawns. 2-Pass Aeration involves two complete passes in different directions, creating twice the soil penetration - perfect for heavily compacted lawns, clay soil, or properties that haven't been aerated in years.
The ideal time to aerate cool-season grasses in Michigan is spring (April - May) or fall (August - October). Both seasons provide excellent conditions for your lawn to recover and benefit from aeration. Spring aeration with overseeding can quickly improve your lawn for summer.
Most Michigan lawns benefit from annual aeration. Lawns with heavy clay soil, high foot traffic, or compaction issues may need aeration twice per year or 2-pass aeration. Sandy soils typically need aeration less frequently.
After aeration, leave the soil plugs on the lawn - they'll break down naturally within 2-3 weeks. This is the ideal time for overseeding and fertilizing, as seeds and nutrients can reach the soil more easily through the aeration holes.
Your lawn may look slightly torn up immediately after aeration, but this is temporary. The grass will recover quickly, usually within 2-4 weeks, and will be healthier and more vigorous than before. Watering after aeration helps speed recovery.
